If attendance at Cal’s one year anniversary party is any inidcation, there are many islanders that are relieved that one of our favorite east end eateries is anything but temporary.

Cal’s Facebook page has dropped the temporary from the restaurant’s name, a huge relief for those of us who plan our “down-island” shopping trips around Cal’s opening hours. He’s only open Tuesday through Friday, which for me makes a Monday shopping trip out of the question. We love to stop on the way home to see what delectable dishes Cal has scribbled on his colorful menu board.
The FB invitation boasted a live band, cash bar and free bocas (appetizers). The one year anniversary coincided with Valentine’s Day, making it even more tempting to search the closet for something red to wear and plan an evening out.

“We should arrive early,” warned my husband. I had to agree, for I expected a huge turnout. Indeed, the roadway was already lined with cars when we arrived as crowds from all over the island poured in.
However, Carl had somehow managed to complete the construction on his expansion, literally overnight. We had been for lunch just the day before, and here, just one day later, the seating capacity had been increased by about 400 – 500% with the addition of a second seating area just outside the original building. Despite the large turnout, there was plenty of seating room for all.

When Carl began to serve the bocas, we were not disappointed. These were no ordinary hors d’eouvres. Large platters of home-made corn chips with decadent dips were followed by hot, fresh tortillas with chicken and all the fixings and a delicious seafood salad.
Three large serving dishes appeared next, with a vegetable lasagna, a rice dish and steaming meatballs in a mouth-watering sauce. Finally, a large cake was served. As always, it tasted as wonderful as it looked.

Bobby Reiman, a well-loved island entertainer, set the mood with his lively mix of reggae and island tunes.
