About Helene, Roatan Honduras
Where is Santa Helena?
Santa Helena (also known as Saint Helene) is located on the far eastern end of the Island of Roatan, the largest of the Bay Islands, 40 miles north of the mainland of Honduras in the Caribbean Sea.
How do I get around?
Part of the allure of Santa Helena is that it is not reachable by car and therefore retains a lot of the “old Roatan” feel, but that can make it difficult to reach. Several boat services will take you to Helena. One of the most common methods is to take a taxi to G&J gas station dock in Oakridge and hire one of the numerous boat taxis there to take you to Santa Helena. This is the way natives of Helena get to the main part of the island to do their shopping.
Where can I stay?
Home rentals are available in Santa Helena but are somewhat limited as this is first and foremost a native community. Many people visit Santa Helena as part of a daytrip to take in an authentic island community.
Where can I eat?
Several restaurants in Santa Helena, such as Jerline’s Place, Channel Bar & Grill and Din Din’s offer seafood and native island fare.
Things to do?
Santa Helena is the closest community to the uninhabited island of Morat and the privately owned island of Barbarat. Barbarat offers one beach open to the public for snorkeling and diving at Jade Beach. Nearby Pigeon Key is also a tourist and snorkeler favorite.
