About Oakridge, Roatan Honduras

Where is Oakridge?
Oakridge is located on the eastern end and the south side of the Island of Roatan, the largest of the Bay Islands, 40 miles north of the mainland of Honduras in the Caribbean Sea. It is the seat of government of the municipality of Jose Santos Guardiola, the smaller of the two municipalities on Roatan.

Things to do?
Oakridge is a fishing village filled with island natives and is historically an English-speaking community, though the communities of El Bight and Barrio Lempira are mostly Spanish-speaking. The dock at G&J gas station, locally known as Lulu’s, is a staging area for boat taxis to take you on snorkel trips to the pirate port of Port Royal and its Cow & Calf outcropping teeming with tropical fish. Close by is also the Mangrove Tunnel at Jonesville Point, where a mangrove forest completely surrounds your boat.

How do I get around?
Oakridge is 17 miles east of Juan Manuel Gálvez International Airport. From the Carretera Principal, turn right at the Texaco to head toward Oakridge. Keep in mind that the last 7 miles on the Carretera Principal will be quite rough with numerous potholes, if you choose to rent a car. Also, as of summer 2024 the Texaco is closed, so G&J gas station is the only location to refuel on the east side of the island. You can also take a taxi.

Where can I stay?
Home rentals are available near Oakridge. Reef House Resort, which has been featured in the New York Times, is located on Oakridge Key.

Where can I eat?
A typical island lunch and fried empanadas are available at the lunch counter at G&J gas station. Serve Coffee and the Salty Dawg share a building on the bay in Oakridge. A boat taxi can take you to Hole in the Wall, a restaurant only reachable by boat, as well as Trico Bar & Grill, located in the Czech Village, a resort community founded by natives of the Czech Republic.
