About West Bay, Roatan Honduras
Where is West Bay?
West Bay is on the western tip of the island of Roatan, the largest of the three islands of the Bay Islands of Honduras in the Caribbean, about 40 miles north of the mainland.
Where can I stay?
There are numerous resorts lining West Bay Beach, including all-inclusives like the Kimpton Grand Roatan and Infinity Bay. There are also hotels, such as Ibagari and Carib Tesoro. There are also numerous vacation home rentals available.
Things to do?
West Bay Beach is one of the most popular beaches in the Caribbean and perhaps in the world. Its position on the northwestern tip of the island protects it from the predominant easterly trade winds, meaning that the surf is usually quite calm. Lounging on the beach and swimming close to shore are popular, but there is swim-out snorkeling within an easy swim from the beach where you can view a variety of tropical fish and even perhaps a sea turtle. Gumbalimba Park offers encounters with animals native to Central America such as monkeys, macaws and the island-native black iguana. Roatan Rum Factory offers free samples of a variety of rums and rum cakes and a back patio with a scenic overlook of the west side of the island perfect for group photos.
Where do I eat?
Numerous restaurants line the beach as standalone dining or as part of a resort. Among the most popular are Bananarama, which features a brick-oven pizzeria, and Argentinian Grill, which offers South American-style grilled meats. Numerous boat taxis stand ready to take you to West End and its even more numerous restaurant offerings for just a few dollars per person.
How do I get around?
West Bay is 8 miles west of Juan Manuel Gálvez International Airport. Most of the resorts of West Bay offer transportation to and from the airport. If you choose to rent a car and drive, be careful of taking the closest route on the south side of the island through Coxen Hole, where traffic can be heavy, especially on cruise ship days. Often the longer route along the north side of the island has less traffic and is quicker. Taxi service is also readily available.
