About West End, Roatan Honduras

Where is West End?
West End is on the western side and the north shore of the island of Roatan, the largest of the three islands of the Bay Islands of Honduras in the Caribbean, about 40 miles north of the mainland. It is just to the west of Coxen Hole, the primary city on the island. Ironically, West End is not the westernmost point on the island, since West Bay is even further west.

Where can I stay?
There are numerous resorts in West End, including Brisas del Mar and Lands End as well as hotels such as Mr. Tucan and Los Corales, which features a giant turtle statue on the roof. There are also numerous vacation home rentals in an area that has perhaps the greatest concentration of available rentals on the island.

Things to do?
West End features Half Moon Bay, a great location for swimming and snorkeling. It is also probably the primary location on the island for souvenir shopping. The pedestrian-friendly West End Road takes tourists to places like Roatan Chocolate Factory, where you can see a demonstration of the chocolate-making process. Dive shops also line the road offering diving, certification and snorkel trips.

Where do I eat?
West End has the highest concentration of restaurants on the island. Sundowner’s is a one of the most popular beach bars for expats, and Ginger’s offers casual fare overlooking Half Moon Bay. For upscale diners, Silverside’s offers gourmet cuisine. If you want an island native dining experience, check out Creole’s Rotisserie Chicken.

How do I get around?
West End is 8 miles west of Juan Manuel Gálvez International Airport. Many of the resorts of West End offer transportation to and from the airport. If you choose to rent a car and drive, your navigation app will probably show you a northern route and a southern route. Take the northern route, as the southern route will take you through the often-congested streets of Coxen Hole and may delay your trip. Taxis are also abundant.
